ROAS Calculator

High revenue from paid ads can mask negative net cash flow. This ROAS calculator evaluates your paid media campaigns across Meta, Google, TikTok, and Amazon Ads, identifying both your actual return and the break-even ROAS target needed to avoid unprofitable spend.

ROAS & Advertising Profitability Formulas

1. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend Multiplier)
ROAS = Ad Revenue / Ad Spend

Gross revenue generated per single dollar of paid advertising expenditure.

2. ROAS Percentage (%)
ROAS (%) = (Ad Revenue / Ad Spend) × 100

Ad revenue as a percentage of ad spend. E.g. 3.5x = 350%.

3. Break-Even ROAS Target
Break-Even ROAS = 1 / (Gross Margin % / 100) = 100 / Gross Margin %

The minimum ROAS needed to cover both advertising and product manufacturing expenses.

4. Net Ad Profit
Net Ad Profit = (Ad Revenue × (Gross Margin % / 100)) - Ad Spend

Actual bottom-line cash profit remaining after paying for goods and ads.

Worked Example: Meta Ads Campaign

You invest $2,000.00 into Facebook ads, driving $7,000.00 in top-line store sales. Your product line operates at a 45% gross margin.

Input Values
Total Ad Spend:
$2000.00
Tracked Ad Revenue:
$7000.00
Product Gross Margin:
45.00%
Calculated Output
Actual Campaign ROAS:
3.50x (350.0%)
Break-Even ROAS Target:
2.22x
Gross Product Margin Profit:
$3150.00
Net Profit Remaining:
$1150.00
Breakdown: Your actual ROAS is $7,000.00 / $2,000.00 = 3.50x. With a 45% gross margin, your break-even benchmark is 100 / 45 = 2.22x. Because 3.50x exceeds 2.22x, the campaign is profitable, generating $1150.00 in net profit after deducting both cost of goods ($3,850.00) and ad spend ($2,000.00).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ROAS calculated?
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) = Total Revenue Generated from Ads / Total Ad Spend. A campaign generating $5,000 in revenue from $1,000 in ad spend has a ROAS of 5.0x (or 500%).
How is Break-even ROAS calculated from gross margin?
Break-even ROAS = 1 / (Gross Margin % / 100). For example, if your gross margin is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.40 = 2.50x. Any campaign below 2.50x loses money after deducting cost of goods.
What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS focuses strictly on top-line revenue generated per dollar of ad spend (Revenue / Ad Spend). ROI accounts for all total business costs and net profit ((Net Profit / Total Investment) × 100).
What should I do if my campaign ROAS is below Break-even ROAS?
If your ROAS is below break-even, you are subsidizing every sale out of pocket. You must improve your conversion rate, increase Average Order Value (AOV), negotiate lower COGS, or optimize ad creative and targeting.
